Certificate in Diaconal Studies

The certificate of Diaconal Studies is a certification program designed for postulants and candidates for the vocational or transitional diaconate in an Anglican jurisdiction.  Other students who wish to deepen their knowledge of the Christian tradition and to prepare for various ministries in the Church are also invited to apply for admission to enroll in classes.

When a postulant for the diaconate is enrolled in this program under the sponsorship of a diocese, these studies should be complemented with supervised ministry experience in a parish or other ministry in the student's diocese while this program provides the academic and pastoral training to be utilized in ministry.

The curriculum for diaconal training will consist of eight required courses:  the six core academic courses plus two additional required courses for diaconal ministry.  Additional electives may be taken in accordance with a student's interests.

Additional Requirements

In addition to the core courses listed above, students in the Certificate in Diaconal Studies program must also complete:
DM1 - Introduction to Diaconal Ministry, including the history and theology of the threefold orders of ministry (bishop, priest and deacon), and the role of the deacon in the parish, the diocese, and the larger Church.

DM2 - Theory and Practice of Ministry, including pastoral care and parish leadership as it pertains to deacons.
